A lot of time, we transition to another phase in our life and we almost do not notice because it just seem natural to us. The changes take place bit by bit until we are able to settle comfortably well into the next phase. It’s almost like we know what’s next and how to do the needed. An example is the move from nursery school to primary school and the trend goes on and on.
I suppose the good part about each of these transitioning stage is that most of the time, there is always someone to hold our hand through them. But a time comes when you need to make the decision to make the change yourself because you feel the need the most. More so, it’s all the more scary because fear gives you a thousand and one reason to stay back where you are and you often have to take that leap alone.
So, what do you think off when you hear the word leap? Well I suppose it’s to jump over and not merely taking a step.Taking a leap can be a big deal, as it thrills you and could even scare you at the same time. However, I suppose at one time or the other in our lives, we will all have to” take that one big leap” or get stuck where we don’t want to be.
Maybe you desperately want a change in one area of your life but you are scared of the unforeseen future and you ask yourself “What if I take that big leap, fall and get injured?
Well, sometimes you just have to close your eyes, swallow the lump in your throat and take that scary jump. Maybe you are scared of exiting that bad relationship because you are afraid that the next guy or girl you meet might be worse, or you don’t want to leave that job you hate so much because you don’t have the assurance that things will work out better.
You have lots of questions with answers you might never know. You are scared of failure, sometimes you don’t even know how to start and you begin to relegate your dream to a wish. Truth is, as much as baby steps matter sometimes you just have to go for “the leap”.
This does not mean that you are no more scared or that you have found a new kind of confidence. It just means that you care too much about the quality of your life to be bullied by fear of failure, or the ridicule you might face from people or even the unspoken criticism that hangs heavily in the air.
I guess all I have been trying to say is that you can never know what awaits you in that unknown future if you don’t take that leap. You can call it a leap of faith too because sometimes you don’t know the next step to take but you know you just have to leave something behind you and it can feel like you are making a blind decision to others.
So, you are about to leave one thing for another and it’s only reasonable that you expect changes. The breakthrough might not happen immediately but it will definitely come as far as you don’t give up on you and as far as you get active in creating the future you want.
PS. This post was inspired by a friend of mine who felt like she was stuck at a job she did not like and with which she found no fulfilment. The job was barely paying the bills, was time consuming and gave her almost no time for herself, her relationships and she could not further her education. To leave or to stay was a daily a battle she had with herself. Her fear was what if she left the job and never got a new one or did not get a better one, or what if the change she desired was a classic “fry pan to fire” case?
However she decided to turn deaf ears to her fears as she turned in her resignation letter to her boss. Her resolution was that no matter what happens, she would never be stranded and she would always find a way. After she left the job, she started searching actively for another job and a month later, she got a better Job. She tells me she’s learning more in her new job and has even taken up a master’s degree programme.
I hope this post sparks up something in you to make that next big change you desire.
